From May 19 to 20, Russian President Vladimir Putin paid a state visit to China.
On May 20, Putin met again with Peng Pai, the Chinese boy who had a group photo with him at Beihai Park in 2000, at the Great Hall of the People. The two shook hands and exchanged greetings.
Peng Pai graduated from Moscow State Automobile and Road Technical University and currently works as an engineer at a large Chinese company.
From July 17 to 19, 2000, Putin made his first visit to China as President of the Russian Federation. During that visit, after touring the Forbidden City, he suddenly suggested taking a boat ride on Beihai.
At that time, Putin interacted with a young Chinese boy named Peng Pai. This warm scene was captured by Mao Jianjun, a photojournalist from China News Service.
After news broke that Putin would “reunite” with Peng Pai, the photography department of China News Service found this precious photo in its archive. The photo shows Putin affectionately holding the young boy, his right hand gently resting on the boy’s head, smiling at the camera.

According to TASS reports, the encounter with Putin had a profound impact on Peng Pai’s life. He mastered Russian, graduated from a university in Moscow, and his friends even call him by his Russian name—Pavel (Pasha), a name that carries the deep bond forged during that historic meeting.
“I never expected to have a chance to meet him (Putin) again after 26 years. This isn’t just double the gain—it’s a hundred times double!” Peng Pai said in a recent media interview.
