Haikou Qilou Architectural Historic and Cultural District

Haikou Qilou Architectural Historic and Cultural District is Haikou’s most distinctive Nanyang-style street scene, built in the early 20th century by overseas Chinese merchants from Nanyang who returned to establish businesses. The oldest building, the “Sipailou,” was first constructed during the Southern Song Dynasty and has a history of over 700 years. This was once the most bustling and prosperous commercial district in Haikou, filled with all kinds of tea houses, taverns, warehouses, grand buildings, theaters, and hotels. Merchants came and went in a steady stream, and the place was alive with vibrant activity, holding the unique memories of Haikou’s old town.

On January 10 this year, the first batch of national-level tourism and leisure districts was announced, and Haikou’s Qilou Historical and Cultural Street became the only one in Hainan to make the list. In recent years, Haikou’s Qilou Old Street has adhered to the philosophy of “restoring the old as it was, preserving the original state,” making its uniqueness and exclusivity even more prominent. More time-honored brands and old alleys have been integrated into modern life, blending the past and present while constantly evolving. It has become a window showcasing Haikou’s urban artistic temperament and cultural confidence, as well as a beloved tourist destination and social media hotspot for visitors from home and abroad.
