When it comes to Shandong tourism, does your mind immediately jump to the sunrise over the sea of clouds at Mount Tai, the sizzling barbecue scene in Zibo, or the blue skies and clear waters of Qingdao?
But not many people know that in Linyi, there’s a hidden gem that exploded in popularity right after it opened—the “Langya Ancient City.”
I promise you, it’s totally different from every ancient city you’ve visited before!
No cookie-cutter influencer photo spots, no generic commercial streets. The moment you step inside, the “time-travel vibe” hits you full force.
You’ll brush shoulders with textbook legends like Wang Xizhi, Yan Zhenqing, and Zhuge Liang; you can dive deep into the everyday bustle of ancient Yizhou, witness wealthy family weddings, and feel the rise and fall of the nation.
And the key to all this? Langya Ancient City’s crown jewel: immersive performances that run back-to-back from opening to closing, with barely a gap.
The entire city is a stage!
The Ultimate Guide to Langya’s Performances
When you come to Langya Ancient City, you can skip every other guide, but you absolutely must lock in the performance schedule. Otherwise, you’ll have truly wasted your trip!
The whole ancient city is a non-stop live-action theater. On a typical day, there are over 200 shows; during holidays, even 800+. From indoor epic spectacles to street-side live acts, from audiovisual feasts to immersive role-playing—you’ll be entertained from morning till night without a single dull moment.
A Must-See in Your Lifetime! Top-Tier Blockbuster Shows:
(Requires separate tickets or a combo pass)
“National Show: Langya”
This is hands-down the masterpiece of Langya Ancient City and the only epic show in Shandong selected for the second batch of the National Tourism Performance Boutique List. Just this one show alone is worth the price of admission.
Performed in an indoor professional theater, over 60 minutes, it takes you from the origins of the Dongyi civilization all the way to the glorious chapter of the Langya golden age.
The nation’s first folding sky canopy and lifting picture frames, paired with high-altitude wires, 3D projections, and a movable stage—wave after wave of audiovisual impact keeps your eyes busy, leaving you with nothing but “stunning” in your head.
“National Scholar: Defending the Land”
If you ask me which performance in Langya Ancient City is the most breathtaking, I’ll say it’s this live-action horse battle show!
This is a major new production that premiered right after this year’s Spring Festival. Over 150 performers and hundreds of horses share the stage, bringing to life the story of Yan Gaoqing and his son holding a besieged city during the An-Shi Rebellion, while Yan Zhenqing tearfully wrote “The Draft of a Sacrifice to My Nephew.”
The sound of horse hooves pounds through the theater, drums shake the ground, and you can even hear the actors’ raw shouts from the front rows. The deep-seated patriotism and familial loyalty etched into the performance will truly make your eyes well up…
Free Must-Sees! A Waste Not to Watch (Included in General Admission):
“Only This Langya”
A rare walk-through performance—you watch the show as you walk, and the immersion is incredible!
Stroll along the 500-meter suspended red corridor as grand ceremonies of the Langya King’s relocation, the legendary tales of the three Zhuge brothers across the Three Kingdoms, and the ink-wash duel between Wang Xizhi and Yan Zhenqing unfold right before your eyes.
Iconic scenes play out in front of you, historical figures brush past, and history flows around you. It truly feels like stepping into a painting, dreaming back a thousand years.
“Fire Show / Water Show”
Many of Langya Ancient City’s performances happen at night, and these two light shows take the evening atmosphere to the extreme.
Visit in autumn or winter for the “Fire Show” – molten iron scattered across the mountains like blossoms, paired with flame dances and the plot of an ancient Dongyi sun-worshipping ceremony. Sparks fall on your shoulders; the awe is almost indescribable.
In spring or summer, lock in the “Water Show” – 500 tons of water crashing down from above, with water curtains and iron sparks in the same frame. The interplay of fire and water is so beautiful it takes your breath away.
