“Of all the cuisines across China, I still love Chaoshan’s the most. When I first came to Guangzhou for university, I noticed so many differences in eating habits. We Chaoshan people love braised goose, while here it’s more about roast duck and barbecue meats. In Guangzhou, folks go for morning tea and dim sum for breakfast, but I’m used to having plain rice porridge with all sorts of pickled side dishes. Every time before heading back to Shantou, I’d make a list of all the foods and snacks I want to eat, call my mom to have her prepare them in advance, and I won’t rest until I’ve eaten everything on my list. If I happen to run into a vendor selling my favorite sugar-onion wafer on the streets of Shantou, even if I’m stuffed, I’ll definitely buy some.”
